NEWSLETTER – JULY, 2026

 

        Summer has indeed arrived at the library with an expansion of both patrons and activities.  As Friends of the Library, our role is to be supportive in as many ways as possible and our relationship with the library itself serves as a model for many groups.

       In June, Friends coordinated with the Pequot Lakes Historical Society to offer a walking tour of what is now Rasmussen Road – the road that, in the early days of Pequot Lakes, was the main thoroughfare.  Many thanks to John Brunes, Cathy Malecha, and Isaiah Loukota of the Historical Society for their history work on this project and from the library, Nancy Adams for writing the script and Ann Hutchings for being hostess for the evening.  Twenty people attended, many asking when the next section of town would be covered.

       At the end of June into July, the Friends Annual Book Sale was held under the guidance of Sheri Moe, a Friends Board Member.  Sheri has led this endeavor for many years and the time and effort she puts forth is truly astounding.  Many library volunteers covered two-hour shifts for the seven days it took place and we hope that you, as a Friend of the Library, made it to the Preview Party held the Friday evening before sale kick-off.   Again, thanks to Ann Hutchings for acting as hostess.  The total raised this year according to Friends Treasurer was $3,198.50

       While Story Time for little ones (3 – 5 yrs.) continues on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m., Nicky Hardy, Library Board President and active volunteer, leads the eight Summer Reading Programs held at the Pequot Lakes School with a theme of “Hidden Community Workers.”  Attendance is hitting approximately 90 to 100 children at each program.  Further summer library programs are available for both youth and adults – with numerous children and adults playing Plinko each time they complete a reading card; playing for numerous prizes paid for by the Friends of the Pequot Lakes Library!

       Finally, and probably the most impacting topic of all is the study for the library’s expansion.  For the past 1 1/2 years, a group made up of Library Board members, Friends of the Library members, and library volunteers, has been meeting regularly to address issues facing our library.  For the 26 years of existence, we have continued to grow…a wonderful problem to have.  Usage remains high, the Children’s Room is always busy, and we have come to realize that, while our current space is crowded, four bathrooms, four furnaces, and four air conditioners do not make for the most efficient environment.  Over the past year, a community survey was taken (almost 200 responses), a needs assessment was done, and a wish list was developed.  At a meeting of the group on July 22nd, it was unanimously voted that we complete a Request for Proposal (RFP) from four firms, three architectural firms that specialize in libraries and one local firm that supervises construction.  It is hoped that these RFP’s will go out on August 3rd.  Friends will cover the cost of this next stage of research with funds that you have generously donated – including money specifically designated toward expansion.  The Board thanks you for supporting this next step and we will keep you posted!
